About Visakhapatnam Kendra

Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS) was founded by Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda in 1917. The objective of YSS is to make available to all the scientific teachings and meditation techniques of Kriya Yoga as taught by Gurudeva, Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda. These timeless teachings and meditation techniques help an individual in achieving all-round success, well-being, and a direct personal experience of God. YSS has more than 200 meditation centers across India. Yogoda Satsanga Dhyana Kendra at Visakhapatnam is one such meditation center to help all Truth-seekers to experience the power of group meditations, and thus to reinforce their spiritual fellowship. In the year 1970, a handful of devotees came together and began to meditate together in Shanti Ashram, on the Beach Road. It is heartening to note that Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda had once visited Shanti Ashram to greet Swami Omkar in the year 1936.

Blessed by the grace of God and Gurus, and with the help of YSS headquarters, enthusiastic local devotees united their efforts and resources in 1999 to construct a beautiful meditation center overlooking the sea and a hill. The Dhyana Mandir, located on the top floor of an apartment building, stands opposite to the Shanti Ashram on the same beach road. This new Dhyana Mandir was inaugurated by Swami Shantananda Giri on 18th December, 1999. Since then the weekly Sunday group meditations and monthly six-hour long group meditations, along with all other spiritual programs are a regular feature at the Dhyana Mandir. The Beach Road, where Paramahansa Yogananda had set his feet to visit the Shanti Ashram in 1936, and where the present Kendra exists, was named as “Paramahansa Yogananda Marg” on 7th March, 2001.

Visakhapatnam Dhyana Kendra has a sub-center in Gopalapatnam, just around 15 kms., away,  which was inaugurated by Swami Suddhananda Giri on 09-01-2008 and regular Sunday group meditations are also being held at this place.
